January Has Arrived, Ready or Not

My brother and his family came to visit us during the day on New Year's Eve.  We took the opportunity to get a group shot since we had not taken one for a while.  Sitting on the couch in the back from left to right are my three nephews, my two nieces, my sons, and my son's girlfriend.

In the front, sitting on the floor is my brother, me holding Max the poodle dog, and my husband.  My sister-in-law is sitting on the chair at the far right side.  It was a fun day, and it was so nice to have the chance to see them all.

(Max the poodle dog is giving my brother a stink eye look because just before the picture was snapped, my brother was teasing Max a little bit.  Max thinks it is necessary to protect me from everyone, even family members.  He will sit in my lap and growl at anyone who comes too close--doing his job to keep me safe--haha!  My brother who knows this and finds it amusing, will come closer and closer to me intentionally trying to rile up the dog.  Max was having none of it and feeling quite fierce on this particular day.  My brother, of course, was not the least bit afraid of Max which infuriated Max all the more!)

This next picture is of just the "kids."  I have to use the term "kids" loosely, I suppose.  Actually, five of the eight are over 18 years old.  Two more will be 18 within just a few months. The youngest is 16.  So, although they will all always be "kids" to me, they are almost all adults.

           1              2                 3                    4                   5

I dug up this old picture of my nephews and nieces from a few years ago just for fun.  I numbered under both pictures so you could tell who is who.
                       3                                 2                                         1                             5                  4

Some place I have a picture with all seven kids--my two boys and my brother's five children--sitting lined up on a couch when they were all babies and toddlers even younger than they are in the picture above.  I looked but didn't find that picture this morning.  It is not one I have in my computer files, which means it is tucked away in a photo album somewhere.  I didn't want to take the time to go and find it for this post, so I thought I'd post the one of just my brother's children instead.

We had a nice visit.  Although we got together on New Year's Eve day, we were actually celebrating a belated Christmas gift exchange.  I made a big lunch for all of us including turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, dinner rolls, corn casserole, broccoli stuffing, and pineapple mandarin salad.  For dessert we had apple crumb pie, pumpkin pie, and peanut butter chocolate chip cookies.  I didn't take pictures of the food, but it was well appreciated.  The pies were store-bought rather than homemade to save myself some time and effort.

Although Christmas was sunny and without snow,  snow has returned here.  I wanted to post the next photos for Rad, who is a new visitor to my blog.  He was wishing for snow, so I thought he might like to see these photos.  This is how it looked when I first got up this morning.  This was the view out the front picture window looking at my front yard and our street.

This was the view a little later this morning out that same window looking the other way down our street.

To get ready to go outside, I bundled up in a sweater, sweatshirt, and puffy winter coat so that I looked a little like the Michelin tire man...

and felt a bit like Randy from the movie "A Christmas Story."

(Also Rad, I hope you will notice I am wearing my new scarf I told you about.  I tied it in the second style you showed on your video because I like to keep things very simple.  haha!  Generally, I am not a big fan of scarves because I don't like the way they feel tied around my neck, but I thought I'd give it a try.  My hat and mittens will go on yet, too, before I head out doors.)

Are you wondering why I needed to be so bundled up?  Well, because it has begun to snow again.  This is how it looks outside my front window right now with the wind blowing and the snow coming down fast and furious.

This is the view from my side window.   January is definitely here and announcing its presence quite clearly, whether I'm ready for it to be here or not.

Daisy, I love the family photos! And the ones comparing the "kids" from "Then" and "Now" are really neat. Your snow is so pretty! We had that little bit on Dec. 27th. It's been unseasonably warm..until a day or so ago..then it got COLD and WINDY! I had to dress like you today, when Vern and I went out for our walk. If it wasn't for that doggie looking at me with "The Look" I would NOT walk in this weather! He just loves to go on walks!! :) Oh, he has a doggie sweater and coat, too! I don't think I've posted photos of them yet.

Fantastic family shots Daisy, the 'kids' haven't changed a bit. I love the way little Max is watching your brother, it's comical lol. My mum had 2 miniature poodles who were exactly the same, very protective of her. We had to lock them outside the room before we gave mum a goodbye kiss or else we'd run the risk of having our ankles nipped!! Have a great week.

The icicles can't be far behind!!!

Thank you for sharing the great family pics! So happy the weather did not prevent your brother from visiting as it has in years passed.

That Max is sure ferocious!!! So cute that he is protective.

Wishing you all many blessings in the new year.

Thank you, Dorothy. I think it is fun to compare the old photos to new ones to see how the kids have grown and how people have changed over the years. :)

Thank you, Susie. I hope you enjoy the snow you get too. Happy New Year! :-)

Becky, I bet Vern looks forward to going on those walks with you. I'm with you, though, I wouldn't be too thrilled with doing it on days when we have weather like this! :)

Thank you, Ryan. Isn't that funny how poodles are like that. They are so possessive and protective, usually of the one who does the most to take care of them. They have a kind of skewed form of allegiance. haha! Hope you have a good week too.

Maple Lane, I was glad the weather didn't prevent my brother and his family from visiting too. We actually do have a few small icicles forming on our gutters already too! I'm hoping they won't be getting bigger for a while. :)
Wishing you a very happy 2012 too!

Some of your photos show the snow blowing and that was what we had the other day but not as much snow.

Daisy said...

Hi Abe. Yes, we had a good mix of both snow and wind. It definitely felt like winter today!

I bet your home was roaring with a lot of good fun! I love the livliness the young bring to a gathering.
I was all bundled for our walk today too! It was blowing here too.
And we finally have a wee bit of snow.

Hi Daisy, We also got out and walked in this frigid weather today.. It was 25 here when we walked --and they say that the windchill made it feel like 13 degrees. We were bundled up ourselves while walking...

Looks like a great visit with your brother and family.. What a nice group... Thanks for sharing...

Your dinner sounded wonderful...
Hugs,
Betsy

Oh, you tried one of the styles! If I could send you a gift of a warm scarf, I would hehe. But, you were clear enough saying you don't really like wearing one :p

Thanks for sharing the snow photos. I do want to experience the snow. I wonder what the clouds are like. I mean... they must look like they're falling apart. We only have two seasons here which are too-hot and so-wet seasons hehehe... when it's about to rain it's just plain dark. So, I wonder what the sky looks like when it's about to snow and to see the first snow falling off the sky. I wanna see the clouds hehe

And, I would go outside and take lots of photos in the snow! :p :p

BTW, this is a genuine comment, your family is gorgeous. I mean everyone in the photo looks handsome and pretty. And, they look like good people too hahaha :p :p

Thanks once again for this post :D

Say hi to Max. I would tease him too actually :p

Nice pixz of 'all in the family.' Oops can't figure out the young and the grown ups haha. Wow you tried Rad's way of wearing a scarf looks great. For Bananaz will take a long wait to wear it when only in overseas trip during winter time.

Daisy said...

Kimberly, the house does seem full of energy when my brother's family visits with all those young people along. I hope you enjoy your snow! :)

Betsy, I hope you stayed warm. That windchill can really take you by surprise. It does me, anyway. :)

Rad, snow clouds look very heavy and very gray, and the sky looks gray too when it is snowing here. I guess when you live some place that has snow often like I do, taking pictures of it doesn't seem very exciting. haha! Thank you for the nice words about my family. They are good people most of the time. :) I will tell Max you say hi. :-)

Thanks, Bananaz! Ha! I wish I couldn't tell which of us is young and which is old. Some days I feel every day of my age. :-)

Rad Sujanto said...

I see. Hmmm I'd always thought the clouds were so white since snow is so white.

Must be a bit weird to you how I'm so curious about snow when you guys there are so bored of it ;)) Really I think snow is so magical. I mean it falls slowly, right? Not like rain. Well that's what I see on TV. Snow flakes fall slowly as if the gravity level is not pulling strong

Daisy said...

Well, there are different kinds of snow. Some snow is very powdery with tiny little flakes, some is big and fluffy with huge snowflakes floating down, and some snow is very heavy and wet. Sometimes we get a mixture of rain and snow together. It mostly depends on what the temperature is outside and how much moisture is in the clouds.

Hey, I like your new avatar picture, Rad. Looks nice! :)

Lynne said...

Happy New Year Daisy! I hope it's a good one for you.
That's a fun looking photo of your family. It's nice to keep a record like that as well.
The weather here is mild but dull-no snow.

Daisy said...

Thank you, Lynne. Perhaps you'll get some snow soon. Happy New Year to you and yours too! :-)

Sandy said...

wow Daisy what fun! I love group family photos with happy faces. Also the comparison was cool.

Rad Sujanto said...

Oh thanks for noticing the new avatar ehehe

Oh, I see. Yes, I've heard a lot of stories about icy roads which are very dangerous for vehicles to run on. Do you have like a frozen lake over there where you and the "kids" can go skating? And, hehehe, are you bored already of making a snowman? I would make one and be proud of it ;)) I'd make my friends on Facebook jealous a bit for the experience of being able to be in the snow and make a snowman :p

Daisy said...

Hi Sandy. Thank you. These group pictures turned out better than most we take. It's unusual for us to have one where everyone has their eyes open and is smiling. haha! :-)

Rad, yes, icy roads can be a problem here sometimes. We didn't really have much of a problem with that with this snowfall because it melted off the streets fairly quickly. There are ponds out in the country for ice skating, or for those of us in town, there is an ice rink. It hasn't been cold enough long enough for the ice to be ready for skating there yet, though. I haven't built any snowmen lately, but have made my share in the past. haha! :)

You have such a beautiful family Daisy. I love Max the wonder dog, lol.... He loves his mommy... Happy New Year. Hugs, LJ

Daisy said...

Thank you Lady Jane. Max does indeed love me. He is right at my side whenever I'm home. Happy New Year to you too! :-)

Beatrice P. Boyd said...

Daisy, it was great seeing your family and the age comparison photos too. Max is certainly a good fellow to have around to protect you :-). We are currently in NH as part of our post holiday road trip and so far have not seen any snow in New England, so it might have all gone to Ohio!

Daisy said...

Beatrice, Max is indeed a very good companion to me. He is a sweet little friend, and he at least THINKS he is doing what is best for me. haha! :-)

Much of our snow has melted here, but we still have a little left on the grass.

Rad Sujanto said...

It's always interesting that we all know our environment or surroundings and it is nice to share the information to others who are curious about it. In this case, I'm curious about snow and you happen to be used to living in a country where it snows every year hehe

You can imagine, we never have any lake or even just a water puddle frozen over here. If it happened here, it'd be super weird to us and very new and we'd be wow-ed! Hehe. It's kinda boring sometimes to only have two seasons in a year and it is such a jealousy to see on TV that people in some countries can experience four seasons with all the differences.

BTW, is that your flower in the avatar picture? :D

Daisy said...

Rad, yes, that daisy in my avatar picture grew in my flower bed. :D

As for being curious about other places, yes, that's one of the best things about blogging, I think. It's fun and interesting to learn about other places and find out what it is like in those places that is different from your own home. :-)

Jenn June said...

Thank you for the pictures of the snow. I've been wishing for some too! :) You have a beautiful family and you all look so happy to be together. What a perfect holiday photo. Love your dog's stink eye! So funny! :D

Daisy said...

Thanks, Jenn June! We usually only get to see my brother and his family two or three times a year at most, so yes, we were very happy to see them. I'm glad you enjoyed the snow pictures. :-)

Rad Sujanto said...

Have you been to countries or places that offered you a whole different way of life or a whole new experience that shocked you a bit?

BTW, did you have a large garden full of flowers before winter?

Daisy said...

Rad, my flower bed wasn't very big, but it was full of flowers. I don't have a lot of space for a garden here.

I haven't really done much traveling, but yes, I have experienced a few things that were different from my own way of life that were surprising or shocking. :-)

You, your nieces & nephews, and sons, look alike. ( must be related ) What a good time, after Christmas. Best time to celebrate it , isn't it?

You have a lot of snow, the scarf suits you, so you can keep very warm and look fashionable even if you don't care to wear it. ( fashion & practicality win out) It is good to have family around for the holidays, especially dearly missed sons.

Daisy said...

Kathy, I think we all take after my Dad! :) It was great to see my brother's family and, yes, very wonderful to have my son home from Florida. He is flying back to Florida today. I can't believe how quickly the time went by.

Brenda Kay Ledford said...

I love the family photos. Your scarf is lovely, too. Sounds like you all had a wonderful New Year's Day. The snow photos are very pretty, too.

Daisy said...

Thank you, Brenda. Having family here did make New Year's a special one for us.

Good times, great photos, and very gracious hostess to do all that food prep! While we're bundling up even to walk down the driveway for the mail, we long for June!

Tracy said...

Daisy, I love the family photo and the ones of the kids; haha! I have some of those as well but they certainly are fun to look at!
and you know how I feel about snow and while it is so beautiful...it really is, well, that doesn't mean I want any. Especially since it was 74 in NC today...ahhh, that was wonderful. I sat on the front porch and actually got some tan lines with my shorts!

Daisy said...

Thank you, Diana. It wouldn't even have to be June for me. I'd settle for the middle of March. haha! :D

Thank you, Tracy. 74!! That sounds so lovely. I'm so jealous! :D

I hope you both have a nice Sunday.

Cary said...

Love the photos, D. You guys get crazy amounts of snow up there! How do you stand it?

Love the kid pics, too. I know it was nice having everyone in the house for a while.

Daisy said...

Cary, we've had a kind of strange winter here so far. Although we have had several snowfalls, we haven't had any really big snows, and the snow we have gotten hasn't stayed around very long.

Today we actually had a fairly nice day with temps making it up to the low 40's. How do I stand the snow when we have a lot of it? I trudge through it and complain and grumble about it a lot. haha! :D

Yes, it was great having the family all together, especially for a happy occasion this time.
