A Proposal to Remember

Imagine a young man inviting a young lady out to dinner.  After dinner he suggests they go for a walk. As they walk, they come upon a small park with a bubbling fountain, a white gazebo, park benches, and flowers all around.

In the gazebo a string quintet begins to play as the young couple approaches.

The young man leads his lady over to a bench in the corner of the tiny park.  As she sits down, he bends down on one knee in front of her and reaches in his pocket to take out a small box.

The music from the string quintet continues softly in the background as the gentleman asks the lady for her hand in marriage.

The lady is surprised and delighted and gives the gentleman the answer he is hoping for, a resounding yes.  He places a ring upon her finger.

Sounds quite romantic, don't you think?  And romantic it was.  This proposal took place in this small park in my town last night. I know this is true because my son is a member of the quintet that was hired to perform the background music during the proposal.  He said it was the best gig they've had yet, and he came home wearing a big grin.  What fun it must have been to be a part of, and a witness to, such a happy event.

This little park was created on what was once an empty, weed-covered corner lot.  The city officials decided to buy the lot and turn it into a quaint, picturesque little park to add some beauty to our town for all to enjoy.

The landscaping of the park was paid for in part by donations from businesses, families, and individuals.  Those who donated to the cause were able to have their name or business name engraved on one of the bricks used in the pathway that winds through the park.  Some who donated had their brick engraved in memory of a loved one who had died.  Others had it engraved in honor of someone celebrating a birthday or anniversary.

Since the park was created, it has been the site where prom couples have gathered to have their photos taken while dressed in their fancy prom dresses and tuxedos.  It has also been the site for numerous wedding ceremonies where vows were spoken among the flowers with the sound of the water fountain bubbling behind them.  It has become a spot where memories are made.  I'm quite sure the proposal for marriage that happened here last night is one that will be long remembered, not only by the now newly-engaged couple, but also by those in the quintet who played music to accompany this turning point in their lives.

Wow - what a beautiful place and how thrilling for your son to be a part of this special memory. Congrats to the couple. Sounds like she is getting a very thoughtful young man! M. Lane

Daisy, bet that this happy story made you feel better composing, after the past one.

Mrs. M., my son and his group had a lot of fun with this. They liked being in on the secret surprise. I'm just glad she said "Yes," and that there was a happy ending! :D

Beatrice, yes, it did. I do prefer to look for the positive rather than the negative, but sometimes the negative is so big that it blocks the view! ;)

Hi Daisy,
Reading thru this, I was thinking you were remembering your own proposal and then I thought it was you son proposing to his girl friend!
Anyway, it was a fun post!

What a beautiful proposal!!! I am glad your son was able to witness this very nice event. This young woman is lucky to have such a romantic man asking for her hand.

Ha! Oops! Sorry about that, Dorothy. It definitely doesn't describe my proposal. My husband proposed to me at the end of the month of January on what was probably one of the coldest days of the year. Outside was snow and ice everywhere--there were no flowers. My son is a little young to propose yet, at least I hope so. :D

Lady Jane, I thought it was sweet and thoughtful of the gentleman too. Made me smile. :-)

A park parked with donations from businesses, families, and individuals, phew probably not very popular over here. So will be hearing and seeing lots of proposal and 'I do' in future. Wow a beautiful and nice park.

What fun...to be a part of such a private and wonderful moment. The park is charming. This guy put some thought into the proposal. Bet he'll put some thought into his marriage as well!

PHew! I was holding my breath, hoping your youngest was a member of the quintet, and not the young fellow asking for the girl's hand! I guess he has several more years before he proposes marriage...hopefully he will be out of HS. It IS a beautiful little park. I like little spots of rest and respite like this park. Hope your weekend is going well!

Hi Bananaz! It really is a pretty little park. Many times I have driven by there and have seen a wedding in progress there. :)

Debbie, he did put a lot of thought into this because he contacted the quintet about hiring them a while ago. He's had this planned for some time. :)

Cassie, actually, I would prefer my son wait until he's out of college before he does any proposing, but yes, at the very least, out of high school. :D My weekend is going well, thank you. I hope yours is too!

Yet another wonderful memory for the quintet members to cherish!

Yes, they have enjoyed quite a few good times together. :)

Sweet story, D. I know your son enjoyed being part of it.

Daisy said...

Thank you, Cary. He did have a lot of fun with it. Being part of the surprise was a kick for him, I think. :-)

And to think how often we tend to not see potential in "empty, weed-covered" corner lots until it's transformed.

I can imagine the joy at seeing the moment playing out. Like they say some memories are forever.

May the little oasis live long and be a home to many more wonderful memories.

Anil P, I'm glad someone had the imagination to see what that little empty lot could become. Many people in our town have enjoyed the beauty that was created there and many memories have been made there, as well. :)

Daisy that story just warms my heart and made me grin at such a romantic young man to put this together. Lucky for your son that he was able to participate. Love the park and what a great idea the city had. Wish we would see a lot of those kinds of changes in our cities.

Daisy said...

Becca, this little park was quite an improvement over that empty lot. This happens to be the corner lot of two fairly busy streets in our town and a lot of traffic goes by it. It was a good way to use that space in a positive way.

The park is wonderful and the incident is also wonderful especially when witnessed by some one live.
I only wish someone would have recorded this on film.

Joe, I kind of wanted to go and make a video of the event, but I felt it really wasn't my place to do that. I also thought that perhaps the young lady would prefer not to have such a private moment taped. It would have made a good scene, though, I think.

wow wow, that is cool!

Daisy said...

I thought it was pretty cool, too, Sandy. The kids in the quintet said it was probably the shortest gig they have ever played, but it was also the most fun. :-)

JL, having seen pictures of the wonderful work you do in transforming outdoor places, I'm sure you could easilly create a similarly beautiful spot. :-)

What a lovely park. I love the photos. This was such a sweet story. I know you're proud of your son being a musician. What a lovely story. Have a great Labor Day.

Thank you, Brenda! I hope you have a great holiday weekend too. :)

Am I a sap for crying all through this? :)

What a romantic way to propose.

At first I was thinking it was your older son, but I was saying to myself "No, he's back at school." But I wasn't sure... until I read your younger son was playing in the quartet.

What a great little park. Wonderful project to buy it, fix it up and so many get the enjoyment out of it.

xo

Jannie, my son's group has played the background music for numerous weddings, at birthday parties, at Christmas Open Houses, and at formal concerts, but this event was just very unique for them. It is something special when that many people conspire together to bring someone joy. :-D

Crying happy tears on my blog is always allowed, by the way. Sad tears, if those are necessary, are always OK too. :)

Karen said...

That is so romantic. I can imagine the music and the expressions on the faces of the musicians!

Daisy said...

Karen, I think it would have been fun to be able to see the expression on the young lady's face too when she realized what was happening. :-)

Romance is alive and well, I can't think of a more beautiful place to propose.

Daisy said...

Ryan, it is quite a pretty spot. It's nice to know too that there are still some who believe in romance these days. :)

Kathleen, this will be a story that couple can share with their kids or grandkids some day, I think. :)
