Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes...

"For time and the world do not stand still. Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future. "   ~ John F. Kennedy

The end of August is drawing near and the beginning of September will soon be here.  This time of year has always been a time of change for me and this year is proving no different.

My older son has moved to Florida to attend graduate school there.  After a very stressful week of living in temporary housing, he moved into an apartment down there today.  Next week he will have orientation meetings for his new school.  He is also busy chasing down leads and looking for a job there.

My younger son's girlfriend will be leaving on Friday this week to move an hour away from here to the university where she will be taking classes on her way to becoming an accountant.  I'm not sure who will miss her more, my son or me!

My younger son went today to the high school to pay workbook fees and pick up a parking pass and get his locker number assignment and turn in the required beginning-of-the-school-year forms.  He will be a junior in high school this year and his classes begin next week.

I will be facing some changes soon too.  Our local Chamber of Commerce offers a nine month Leadership class which I will be taking starting in September.  The library is paying my tuition for me to take this class.  It meets once a month, and I will be learning more about various aspects of our county's history, government, educational system, and legal system, among other things.  With this class I will also be attending a two-day retreat, a city council meeting, and a school board meeting and working with others in the class to do some type of community service project after the class is over.  I'm excited and a little nervous too about taking this class.

I have no picture to show you of the Leadership class, but here's a picture of a little tiny change in my life from this week that I can show you.  I was given a gift certificate for a manicure at a local salon recently and last night I went and had my nails done. I thought they turned out pretty well.  (The daisy was not part of the manicure.  I just held it for the picture since it was going to be for my blog.)   :-D

We are changing all the time and so is the world around us.  My younger son wanted to try growing watermelons this summer.  Since we don't have a garden, I told him he could plant watermelon seeds in my flower bed.  The vine has grown so much that it has nearly taken over the flower bed and is now growing over the edge of the driveway.  It changes some every day, or so it seems.

There are several little watermelons growing on the vine.  I hope the growing season will last long enough that they can mature and get big enough and ripe enough to eat.  The watermelons right now range in  size from about as big as a marble to one that is about twice the size of a softball.  The squirrels (darn tree rats!) have gnawed off a few of the little ones, but we put pepper and bone meal around the plants trying to deter them from getting the rest of them.

These last two photos are of the same melon taken just three days apart.  Can you see how much it has grown?  This is the one that is now about twice the size of a softball. We had a couple of days of heavy rain which gave it an extra boost.

Change isn't always easy and sometimes it can be quite difficult, but it is necessary and will happen whether we like it or not.  Change is usually a good thing.  Without change, we would be standing still and becoming stagnant instead of growing and improving.  Without change, how would we ever know what a juicy, red, ripe watermelon tastes like?  Without change, we can't learn new things and expand our horizons.  Without change, there is no future as pointed out in the quotation by John F. Kennedy in the beginning of this post.  Without change in the clouds and the sky, we would never get to see a beautiful sunset like this one.

Daisy, your manicure is really pretty. I have no nails! I know you are missing your son. It does make us sad and I think that surprises us. You know what I've been doing lately in that area!
I know a great book!
Hugs, Deb

Daisy you are right about change and how it keeps right on occurring. Those watermelons look great; I think it is best to keep them watered in a steady manner so they don't crack or split.

Yes, change happens.. It is GOOD--but is not always easy... Sounds like your kids are all doing fine --and congrats to you for being chosen for the Leadership class.

It is scarey at first when we step out into something new. But it is usually then that I find that I really am capable of more than my wee little mind thought I was!
I'm sure you'll do great in your
leadership classes.
Your whole family is experiencing change. I hope it is good for all of you.

How true that all is Daisy. What a lot of changes your family are going through, but all positive I'm glad to say.

Lynne said...

Sorry, I forgot to say how great your nails look. Also, I do recognize how difficult it must be for you as well all these changes, especially your son moving away.

Wow whole lotta change going on from school, uni, friendship, tuition and manicured finger nails to green fingers. Glad its changing for the better. Soon you would be able to savour your home grown melons...

Some hard changes there, Daisy. Take a big ((hug))

Your Leadership class sounds like a wonderful opportunity - I hope you keep us posted; I'm especially eager to hear about the retreat and the community service project you decide on. So good to see that your watermelons are doing well! Missing loved ones who move farther away is a bummer, but makes us thankful for all the modern ways to keep in touch.

Debbie, thank you. I think I'm going to have to see if I can get that book through the library. I'm sure it would help me cope and give me a new way of looking at things. :)

Terra, thank you. I hope the watermelons do well. My son is so excited at their progress so far. He checks on them every day. :D

Thank you, Betsy. I'm looking forward to the class. Others who have taken it have told me how much they liked it. :)

Kimberly, I have found that is true. I am able to do things I never thought I could if I just am brave enough to try them! :-)

Lynne, yes, my son moving away has been very hard for me. I miss him a great deal. He is excited about his new home and new opportunities, though, so I am happy for him.

About my nails, thank you. Usually I don't fuss with my nails, other than trimming or shaping them. Once in a blue moon I paint them myself for a special occasion like a wedding or something, but having them done professionally was quite out of the ordinary for me. It was fun to be pampered a little, though. :-)

Bananaz, it's been a bit of a whirlwind around here this summer, but everything seems to be falling into place the way it should. I am looking forward to those melons. I hope we can keep the squirrels out of them! :D

Thank you, Michelle. Big hugs right back at you! :D

Diana, I am very glad we have so many ways to keep in touch. It really does help a lot. The retreat is coming up in September. It is the first meeting we have for the class, so it should be fun and interesting! :D

I have met a few ladies in the neighborhood facing their son's going away to college for the first time. I know your older son has already been to college BUT FL seems really far away, doesn't it? May God richly bless both your sons in the year ahead. Also, your younger son's girlfriend is familiar to all of us who follow you blog and I hope/pray she will be very happy and have a blessed year as well.
Congrats on the Leadership Conf. - this seems like a wonderful opportunity for you. Your nails/hands are so lovely. I've never had a manicure!
Best wishes with the watermelons!!!

Carolyn, I'll be thinking of you in the next few weeks. You're not alone in feeling this way. There are a lot of us in the same boat. Hugs to you, and I hope it gets easier for you as the days go by. :)

Thank you for all your kind words, Kathleen. My son's girlfriend is here right now and so excited about going off to college tomorrow. I'm glad she will only be an hour away so that we can see her often. :-)

Mrs. M, thank you. Florida does seem like a very long ways away. I guess I will get used to him being there. I don't really have a choice in the matter. I am happy for him and his new opportunities.

This was the first time for me to have my nails done in a salon. It was fun, but to me it seems rather expensive. I can paint them myself for much, much less! haha! I rarely paint them, though. I just don't usually fuss with that sort of thing much. :-)

God is so good to see us through all the changes, but I know you will miss the kids! My youngest decided to move to Kansas City (8 hr drive from here)

Daisy said...

Karen, I'm sure you miss your youngest being that far away. I know I will miss mine too--I already do! Life will go on just the same. I hope you have a nice weekend! :)

I am nodding a lot reading here today - time is a crazy thing. Seems like just yesterday that I was just venturing out into the world myself. I love that you share your life with us. It seems as I know you after years of being blog freinds!

Daisy said...

Speedy, it doesn't seem that long ago that I was in college either, although obviously it has been a while. ha! I'm glad to know you and call you my friend. We have shared a lot over the last few years. :-)

Watermelons grow real fast. We had a few in our garden.
Didi not know about the pepper and bone meal idea.....
Like the inclusion of that daisy in the manicure.
Good to know that there is a good raport with your son's girlfriend.

Daisy said...

Hi Joe. Well, the pepper and bone meal isn't working very well. The squirrels are still invading the melon patch. My son put netting out over them this morning trying to keep them out. We will see if that works!

Yes, my son's girlfriend is very sweet and has a good heart. She's a wonderful person. :)

You and your family may have a lot of changes happening at the moment Daisy but these are positive changes that will benefit you guys long term, yes you will miss your son and your sons partner but I'm sure it won't be long untill you are all together again. Have a great week.

Daisy said...

Ryan, you're right. These are positive changes. I have much to be thankful for. Thank you, I hope you have a great week too! :-)

That's true, Tracy. Sometimes change is a good thing, but takes a little time to adjust to too. :)

So many changes with your kids, and you...That leadership class you are taking sounds interesting and challenging - like a lot to learn.

Your nails look pretty.

Changes abound here and some still going on.

Daisy said...

Sandy, I'm not quite sure what to expect with the leadership class. Others who have taken it tell me I will like it. I guess I'll find out. You are definitely going through a lot of changes there, but they seem to be for the good too. :)

Yes, ever-changing, moving on, growing, learning. The September song.

Melons growing great, Daisy. Bet they will be tasty!

Graduate school, wow, how cool. You must be so proud of him. Glad to hear he got his housing settled, a load off your minds I bet.

So who is sweeter -- your or your son's girlfriend? i bet it's a tie!!

Enjoy your Leadership course. Do you plan to run for office? If so, I'll vote for you!!

GORGEOUS mani!

xoxo

Nice mani---I prefer these rounded tips to the flat tips that some get. I didn't realize that youngerson was dating a much older woman! hehe. Change...inevitable. What I was dealing with in PA with my mom.At 88 she's having a little trouble taking not being in complete control anymore. Ahhhh. I know you know all about this too. Have fun in your new class kiddo! x

Such a thought provoking post Daisy! Your leadership class sounds so interesting -you'll have to tell us more and also what the retreat is like! Your nails turned out beautiful. So many changes - especially w/ your kids getting older, I think that it is always a happy/sad kind of growth. I just realized it the other day when my 12 yr old stepson announced he was going to play football at his middle school. I was looking at him and picturing the 3 year old boy I would play Pokemon cards with. Change is a coming!
hugs to you Daisy!
Shelley

Jannie, thanks for the vote of confidence, but I have no intention of running for office. I don't think politics would be a good fit for me. I think the class is more aimed at helping people be better community leaders, but not necessarily political leaders. :) Who is sweeter? I think I'd have to say that's a tie.

Cassie, yes, there's about a year and a half years difference in age between younger son and his gal. Seems more significant now than it will in a few years from now. I'm sorry to hear about your mom. Yes, I've been there. My heart goes out to you and to your mom.

Shelley, I can remember when my boys both were into playing with the Pokemon cards and toys. Time flies by quickly! I'll have to remember to report back here about how the class goes. :)

Change is great! Always a new adventure or a new twist to a continuing one! Niced nails.

Daisy said...

Thanks, Lanny! Yes, change does bring us new things to think about and see and do. I hope you have a nice weekend. :)

Change is the one true constant of life.

The fun of tending to kitchen garden variety of vegetables and fruits is watching them grow, somehow it renews one from within.

Daisy said...

Anil P, I have always enjoyed watching the progress of fruits and vegetables growing in the garden, even when I was a little girl. It is a very positive feeling for me.

We check the watermelons daily. They are growing bigger and bigger. One is, I believe, just about ready to pick! :-)
