Stepping Off at Six O' Clock

In a small town on a Saturday night,
Who knew?
That so many would think
that the very best thing to do
would be sitting and watching
the parade go by
from left to right.
We watched but never questioned why.
Riding in chairs on a truck--
there goes the city band!
Oh and don't forget
the Spangler's candy tanker
and the trolley
that came along
with the Dum-dum sucker man.

Who would have guessed
there are so many kinds of Shriner?
Those riding little cars and little bikes
(One bike lost a chain in front of the diner).

Big men wearing tasseled fez caps,
and some dressed like clowns
going round and round in twos,
and those on flying carpets
wearing gold hats
and pointed shoes,
(Well, you know, there's nothing finer!)

I remember one time I did a post about circus peanuts and you told me about Spangler Candy Co. John just last night watched a real life murder mystery where the killer had been caught due to his habit of eating circus peanuts!!!!!
We had/have a parade similar to yours in my hometown. I always enjoyed chasing the candy that they tossed! Looks like it was a lovely day to be outside.

Mildred, it really was the perfect day for a parade that day. It wasn't raining or too hot, just sunny and nice.

We had fun, Betty. It was small town life at its best!

Tracy, Spangler Candy, who makes the Dum-dums, is a big presence in our town. They are one of the biggest and oldest and most well-known factories that we have here.

Terra, it was a fun time. There were other entries in the parade besides the Shriners, but there were a lot of different Shriner groups represented. I wasn't expecting so many!

Becca, I was a little surprised at how many people were there. There had been a street carnival on our town square the past week and the parade was like the grand finale of the week. The little kids along the parade route had great fun chasing down the candy they were throwing out to the crowd.

Our annual July4th parade is coming up soon and it's a non-motorized event. We've been several times and will most likely be back this year too. These summer-time events can't be beat.

So cool!

In Oatman, Arizona there is a group of Shriners that perform a daily Western themed shoot-out. I think one of the performers is well over 80...they're all great!

Beatrice, it is nice when the people in a small town all come together at an event like this. There is a certain camaraderie that is hard to find elsewhere. :-)

Carol, they are entertaining and certainly should be commended and thanked for the charity work they do for their children's hospitals. :)

Looks like you had fun Daisy!
I thought the first photo in your previous post was your son!

Daisy said...

Hi Lynne! It's surprising how much he looks like my Dad, isn't it. :)

How do I apply to be one of those guys driving the red sports cars while wearing a fez, great fun.

Daisy said...

Ryan, I don't know where you go to sign up, but those guys sure acted like they were having a blast. :)

Daisy,
The poem and the parade are great. This looks like a lot of fun. Your photos are great and I enjoyed the event, too.

Hi Kochuravi and Bananaz! Thank you! :)

Brenda, thank you. We did have a nice time. It was fun to see so many people gathered on our town square too. :)

Thank you, Kathleen! I hope you have a great weekend too! :)

I hope the candy being tossed was dum-dum lollipops! Looks like lots of fun - we all love a parade.

Diana, yes there were lots of Dum-Dums tossed out to the kids that day. There were some other candies too, but I think Dum-Dums were the ones given out the most. The kids sitting in front of us on the curb all had plastic bags full of candy that they had caught. :D

fun pics - and those grown men in the small cars, makes me laugh. I like the dum dum pop truck.

Those guys were pretty funny, Sandy. They looked like they were enjoying themselves too. :)

I love a parade. Our little town up here in Idaho doesn't have a 4th of July parade and NOT EVEN fireworks this year. We may have to travel over to Montana to get in the spirit of things!

Daisy said...

I hope you find some fireworks, Cassie. They had ours here last week. I don't know why, but ours are always the week BEFORE July 4th! ha!
