Ohio Scottish Games

Yesterday, we traveled to Wellington, Ohio to the county fairgrounds to see the Ohio Scottish Games.

The main reason we went was because my blog friend, Laura, who is from Canada, had let me know that she and her daughter were going to be there so that her daughter could participate in the Highland Dance Competitions.

Laura, her daughter Mae, and me

This is Mae at the tents where they kept their gear stored while the competitions were going on.

Mae is in the back row in this photo waiting her turn to dance.

Mae on the left in blue.

Mae doing the dance of the swords.

This is one of the men who played the bagpipes for the dancers.

These are some of the dancers lined up after the competition during the awards ceremony.  Mae is #415 in the middle.  She received three medals at the morning competitions and three more at the afternoon competitions. She did a fantastic job!

There were other events at the games too.  There were border collies herding sheep and ducks in competition.  Some beautiful Clydesdale horses were there.  Several Scottish bands and musicians were there.  Men playing bagpipes and wearing traditional Scottish kilts and such were everywhere!

While I watched the dancing, my husband went to watch some of the field games that the men participated in.  He watched the men throwing heavy weights over a high bar (set up kind of like a pole vault) which I think was called the sheaf toss, but I'm not sure.  There were also men throwing big logs end to end in what is called the caber toss.  This picture shows some of the logs used for that.

He brought me back scones with strawberries and cream when he returned.  Yum!

Some of the other sights to see of the day included the following:

a falconer,

a flower flag

swords on display

I'm not sure what these are.  We thought that perhaps they were target dummies to use swords against that are made to look like the English, but we weren't sure.  I thought they were kind of amusing, whatever they are.

We watched the parade of the clansmen, where each clan sported their tartan plaids and colors.

This burly Scotsman was part of a group that does historical re-enactments.  He looked pretty intimidating, but he was kind enough to pose for a picture with me.

Close to the end of the day we saw the Goodyear Blimp float by overhead.
It was great fun, and I enjoyed having the opportunity to meet fellow blogger, Laura, and her daughter.

Hi Daisy, Congratulations to Mae! How very talented she is. How wonderful to meet Laura and it looks like you had a very nice day to enjoy the festivities. Your husband should get bonus points for bringing you the delicious strawberries and scones! That looks so good!

Mildred, the strawberries and scones were very good! We did have a perfect day weather wise. The temperatures were mild, not too hot or cold. We had sun part of the day and clouds part of the day, but no rain. It was fun watching Mae and the others dance. They were a very talented group! :D

What a fabulous day, loads packed into it and meeting a fellow blogger! Looks like you had a lovely time. Mae looks the part, in fact they all do. It seems quite impressive all those Scottish traditions happening so far from Scotland.

Daisy said...

Lynne, I really felt like I was able to experience a bit of the Scottish culture and tradition there, like I took a mini vacation. :)

Oh, you've made me a bit homesick for Nova Scotia, "New Scotland," that is. But made me smile so much too for you meeting your friend -- Canadian!

And all these lovely pictures.

The strawberry shortcake looks ace!

That burly Scotsman reminds me of Gimli from The Lord of the Ring where he uses the axe as his weapon. Oh love to hear the sound of bagpipes they are nice to listen. tQ.

Daisy said...

Thank you, Kochuravi! I hope you have a good day too. :)

Yes, that is a good comparison, Bananaz! You would have enjoyed this festival. There were bagpipes being played in several areas of the fairgrounds. :)

Congratulations to your friends little girl for doing so well in the Highland dancing Daisy. As for the little puppets, they are British troops also known as redcoats who were hated by the Scots. Looks like they've been set up as target practice. Great post Daisy I'm glad you enjoyed your day in wee Scotland.

Daisy said...

Thank you, Ryan. It was a lot of fun! I guessed that's what the puppets were used for, but I wasn't sure. I thought you might know for sure what they were. :-D

Mae is not only very pretty, but very talented. What a fun day, and you got to hang out with interesting people, even better, an interesting sister blogger. I love these kinds of outings. My favorite picture ( they are all nice)is the one of you and the burly Scotsman. Now I would hang that up in my office or study if I were you. :)

Daisy said...

Betsy, nice to have you back! You were missed! :)

Kathy, that Scotsman looks pretty impressive, doesn't he? HA! There were others taking his picture. He was very patient and was a good sport to pose for us. :)

I LOVVED this!! I have always been tempted to go to the Scottish games when they have them in Arizona. Never have yet, but now I might make it a point to do so. Your friend's daughter is sweet looking. WOuld have loved to see a clip of her dancing. Is it like Irish dance?? Big Red, the Scotsman, reminded me of my Uncle Jim(RIP) with those huge eyebrows. The red hair is like my Patrick's before he got old.lol.

Daisy said...

Cassie, I think the dancing is similar in some ways to Irish dancing. She did a lot of high kicks and jumps. If you get a chance to go to the Scottish games there, I recommend them. It was a lot of fun. :D

Gayle, that is neat that your friend was a national champion! How exciting! We did have a lot of fun that day. :)
