Winter's Grip
A giant hand
with snow fingers and nails of ice
gripped the awning over the porch
until the warmth of the afternoon sun
relaxed it
and
coaxed it to loosen its hold,
causing it to let go
and slip
and drip
away.

You are just showing off now!!!!! Your icicles are much bigger than mine were! It does look just like a giant hand with nails and it's a great poem as always.
Our snow was so dry that I don't think we had any icicles much.. There is one on the side of the house --which comes off of the roof and freezes on one of our windchimes...
Your icicles are gorgeous. We are supposed to get much warmer this coming weekend --with some rain... Guess that will melt most of the rest of the snow.
Thanks for sharing.. Love the poem.
Hugs,
Betsy
Hello! I was here, asking for friendship. ;) Would you like to follow each others blogs? Advance Happy New Year. :D
owh, wow...interesting! i didn't know the winter can do such wonders. haha..happy new year 2011! :) interesting blog you have here. :)
Cool! Perfect poem for the perfect icecicles! Those are kinda creepy!
Love it Daisy! That's a real giant hand!
How interesting. really look like one :D
I love to see the snow I hope I will not freak out if one day I have the opportunity to live in a snowy place like this.
Okay What Am I trying to say? I am still in a Santa suits! LOL
Your snow and icicle photos are always so unique and beautiful! I remember that from last winter, too! Thanks for sharing!
Mildred, you know I was thinking of you while taking these pictures. HA HA! ;-D
Betsy, we are supposed to get warmer temperatures and some rain in the next few days. I will certainly welcome some warmer temperatures. It has been cold here for so long. :)
Hello, Kristina! Nice to meet you. Thank you for visiting here. I'll stop by your blog and check it out. Happy New Year to you! :)
Hello Gabriel! Thank you for taking the time to visit and comment here. Happy New Year! :)
Sarah, they were kind of creepy. Because of the way they were melting off the roof, they were curled back under the awning, and they really did look like giant pointy fingernails! HA! :-)
Hi Netster! If you lived where there was a lot of snow, you'd get used to it in a hurry. At least your Santa suit would help keep you warm. HA HA! :D
Hi Becky! Thank you. Yes, we seem to get ice of some sort every year. It is interesting how different it can be from one year to the next. :D
Daisy, That's one of your best short poems!! Guess I'm glad our ice and snow didn't last long!
Thank you, Dorothy! I'm looking forward to warmer temperatures here this weekend. :)
I snapped an icicle off the garage the other day that must have been as big as my leg. That's what happens when we leave for a few days, I guess.
Elliott, I think you got a lot more snow and weather out your way than we did here recently. Not that I'm complaining! HA! When the icicles get that big, I start getting afraid that they are going to fall on somebody's head!
Oh my gosh, Daisy, it DOES look like a giant hand and fingernails...cool!
Hi Tracy! I'm very happy to say that those icicles have all melted away up there, at least until another big storm goes through. I'm sure we'll get a few more before winter is over. :-)
Interesting shot of the icicles Daisy. I was setting here thinking this morning that we have gotten off really lucky so far. Its supposed to be dang near 70 degrees today. Do you have any big plans for New Years?
Hi Kathy! We are supposed to have some warmer temperatures here the next couple of days too.
No, I don't have any big plans for New Years, although we are going to a Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert tonight that I'm looking forward to. We usually have a pretty quiet New Year's Eve and day.
I hope you have a Happy New Year!
We have FAR too much weather here. Today's dose was black ice. Mildly unpleasant on the road, downright horrible in the parking lot here at the office, with its 20-degree pitch. The snowbank stopped me, but I'm still parked at an angle in a non-angle parking lot.
Can hardly wait to see the house tonight. I've already got ice shelves off the back that extend my eaves by a foot.
Brrrr! That looks sooooo cold. It does look like fingers. Have a happy new year Daisy. May it bring only good things.
Elliott, I hate driving or walking on black ice. Dangerous stuff! Be careful out there.
Thanks, Becca. It was pretty cold when I took that picture. It is a little warmer today. Wishing you a happy New Year too! :-)
It didn't help that half of my department was watching the whole incident from the window, either...
Oh no! HA!
The news has successfully made the weather sound absolutely brutal everywhere, everywhere but here that is. I sure hope that hand doesn't grab you!
I LOVE the Transiberian Orchestra! I hope you had a wonderful time at the concert. Your icicle photo is very cool (tee hee) and the poem is perfect.
Lanny, HA! We're quite safe from that hand. It has all melted away, as has our snow. Over night the temperatures have come up and right now it is 44 degrees here. It feels wonderful! :D
Thank you, Diana. HA! You're clever. :-) The concert was wonderful. Loved the music! Traffic going there was a bit of a nightmare, but coming back home it was smooth sailing. Over all, we enjoyed the trip.
Oh, I love your poem and it looks just like and ice hand and fingers gripping your house! Make me cold! You stay warm and watch out for falling icicles! Have a wonderful new year! blessings,Kathleen
That slipping away~this year is the first time I noticed it from our metal roof. Looks so strange. Very good words to go with the creeping icicle pics! I always get confused, is that a haiku??
Blessings to you and the fam for the new year friend! xx-c
Thanks Kathleen! Happy New Year to you too! :-)
Thank you, Cassie! No, this isn't a haiku. Haikus have a certain number of syllables and lines and such. This is just a free verse poem. I hope you and Patrick have a happy new year! :-)
wow, love the photos, especially looking from inside the door out.. ohhh such cold! Good poem to go with it...
Daisy, thanks so much for your steady visiting of my blogs all year long, it has meant a lot to me...
Thank you, Sandy! I'm glad you liked the pictures and poem. Your visits and comments here mean a lot to me too! :D
Beautiful shot...and lovely words to go with it...coming over for a visit from David's britsintheus blog...
Thank you, Rek! I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for visiting and commenting here too! :)
