So yesterday, when I came home for lunch from work, I found this going on at my house. I had to take pictures from inside the house looking out my kitchen window because I didn't want to get hit in the head by a falling branch!
I wanted to stay and watch them take the whole thing down, but my lunch hour was up, and I needed to get back to work. So I returned to work and when I got back home again, this stump and a lot of sawdust was all that was left of the tree.
It makes me a little sad to have the tree be gone, but I am already planning to plant some new trees this spring in the back as replacements. I won't be planting another maple as we already have two large maple trees in the front yard. I would like to plant two cherry trees or perhaps an almond tree. Maybe I'll plant all three! They are all much smaller trees than the maple tree that was there, and I think they would fit nicely in the back yard.
As happens so often, this whole tree cutting business put a song in my head. And, as so often happens, the song in my head has very little to do with the actual event of the day.
When I was a young girl, both my mother and grandmother listened to a great deal of country music. I can't tell you how many old country music (or country and western as they called it back then) songs are drifting around in the cells of my brain. I can tell you that the lyrics and melodies of these songs pop into my awareness at the oddest times. This tree being cut down from my back yard was one of those odd times that made one of these songs resurface.
So the song that has been stuck in my head for the past two days is this one by Ferlin Husky. I have a feeling that very few, if any, of my readers will be familiar with it. My brother and I (as little kids) would sing along to the record of this that my mother had. My brother liked to sing the deep voice bass echo part while I sang the melody.

I hate cutting down trees too. You really didn't have a choice with this one though. I like your new tree choices! Someday, I want a pink dogwood tree. I love those.
Chris, yes! I love those too! They are so beautiful in the spring.
We had cherry trees in our yard when I was growing up and I loved the cherries we got off of them every year. I thought it would be fun to try and grow my own. :-)
Hi Daisy,
I know you are glad to get this ailing tree removed. I don't remember this song, but I bet Jeep does. He knows about a gazillion old country songs plus the hymns, etc. Guess you know there are people who will grind your stump up for a very reasonable price. I had one done and they ground it down into the ground and you couldn't even tell there had been a tree there! Good luck with your new trees! Fall is a good tine to get them in the ground.
Hi Dorothy! Yes, I wouldn't be surprised if Jeep knows this song since he's a musician himself. It's funny how they stay with you even if you haven't heard them for years and years!! :-)
Hi Daisy, I'm happy that the tree could safely be removed. You will enjoy choosing some smaller specimens in the Spring. I don't remember this song but I do remember Ferlin! I can just imagine your brother singing the bass! Cute memory.
Have a blessed Sunday.
Mildred, I am relieved to have that tree down. I often worried that a storm might bring another large branch or even the whole tree down on our garage or on one of our cars. It is much safer to have it out of there. Another song that Ferlin Husky sang that I remember hearing even more back then was "On the Wings of a Dove." :) Happy Sunday to you!
Yes, that's the song - I remember it now! My very best friend when I was around 5 or 6 lived with her grandma and on Sat. nights she would sit glued to the tv listening to Ferlin and would "shhh" us if we made a peep!
I remember that song! I always hate to see trees go, but I cant help but watch the process.
well I bet the replacements will look good. Like the sequence photos
I hate to see trees being cut down also--but sometimes you just have to do it. We had a dead one in our front yard a few years ago --so we had to cut it down... It had to be done...
I remember Ferlin Huskey... Hadn't thought of him for years and years.... Neat!!!!!
Have a great Sunday, Daisy.
Hugs,
Betsy
ohh poor trees ... Lets plant a new one :)
Happy Weekend Daisy, dance to grove :)
Mildred, Ferlin Husky was one of my Grandmother's favorites too. :D
Betty, I thought it was fascinating to watch how they go about it too. They did it in a very step-by-step fashion. It was obvious to me they know their job well! :-)
Thank you, David. I hope the new trees we put in do well. I am looking forward to having sweet, dark cherry trees. It would be great to be able to just step out to my back yard and pick a bowlful off the tree. :-)
Thank you, Betsy! I hope you have a great Sunday too. I hadn't thought of Ferlin Husky for ages either until this song popped into my head. :D
Hey there, Netster! Happy weekend to you too. Once I get new trees planted I will feel like doing a dance, for sure!! HA! :D
Ow Daisy.. I think it's good to cut out that old tree...
here in my city there's a bad experience when the old tree fallen upon some car which parked right under the tree....because of the wind brunt...
It's very danger when a tree become too large next to our house...
sound good if you will plant another tree that not too large..
I love to see all the pics, so that I can figured what happened there in your place..
And the song... make me wanna dance...haha...!!
hope you have a wonderful day, my friend!
hugs,
nensa
Hello Nensa! Every time we had high wind here the last few months, I wondered if a branch was going to fall and cause damage, so it is a relief the tree is gone now. It makes me smile knowing this song makes you want to dance. :D Happy day and big hug to you!
Don't fell too bad about the tree, if it was diseased and dangerous then it had to come down. Why do random tunes pop into our heads?
Ryan, isn't it funny how certain words or events will trigger a song in our heads, and when we hear certain songs it brings back very specific memories? I'm not sure why it happens, but it happens to me a lot. It surprises me sometimes how many song lyrics I have in my head. :-)
It's nice that you already have in mind some replacements for the tree. Cherry trees are lovely in the springtime.
Yes, that is so true, Lynne. I love the branches full of blossoms. The glory of the blossoming trees is one of my favorite things about spring. :)
I know it's necessary sometimes but I just hate to see trees go bye-bye.
Those guys have dangerous jobs. They definitely earn their money.
Susie, I was watching that guy going way up in that cherry picker, and I kept thinking, "I'm glad that's not me up there!" :-)
Daisy,
I hate cutting down trees, too. It's interesting how they cut trees now. Sometimes we have to cut trees when they are a danger to our house in case a storm blows them on our house. I like trees and hate to see them cut.
I hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving.
Thank you, Brenda. Happy Thanksgiving to you too! :)
Gotta love that northern Ohio weather! We have some elderly maples out front, and I get nervous every time the wind kicks up. Sorry for your loss, but I guess it could have been worse...
Ben, that's right. It would have been much worse if it had been blown down or pulled down by an ice storm. I'm afraid some squirrels may have lost their home when our tree came down. I guess they'll have to find another one to live in! :-)
Ha, never heard of that song. I agree, sad to have trees but down but necessary at times. We went through a lot of trimming this last summer. We had a crew out that also took down a tree in my back yard that was starting to affect the cement garage floor as it had been growing too close. You will be safer now and that's good.
Hi Sandy! Yes, it is surprising how much damage the roots can do if they grow under cement where you don't want them. We didn't have that problem with this one, but I have seen that elsewhere. I do feel safer with this one down now. :-)
