I had an interesting and unusual day today. I drove to Bowling Green, Ohio for a Performers Showcase by video conference. There were 22 different people in the showcase. Each of these people travel around to libraries to present a program or to put on a performance of some sort. They each gave a twelve minute snippet of their performance via video conference for us to preview. The purpose of this conference was to give us new ideas for programs that are available for booking at our libraries.
My favorite presenter today was a man named Jeff Nicholas who is an illustrator and author. He demonstrated how to draw one of his cartoon characters, a kangaroo, and then recited a story he had written about it while showing his accompanying illustrations. It was quite clever and funny, and the story was written in the form of a rhyming poem that made it even more whimsical. I really enjoyed his presentation and would have liked to see more of it. I'm sure our patrons, and especially the children who visit our library, would enjoy his work as well. You can read about him and see some of his fun cartoon illustrations here.
The other acts included musicians, storytellers, magicians, jugglers, and a scientist. Many of the acts were quite good, but by the end of the day, I have to admit, I had seen quite enough. Twenty-two acts in one day may have been a few too many. Actually, there were to be twenty-five acts, but three of them didn't show up. It's pretty easy to cross those three names off the list as possible ones to hire!
By the time I was on my way home, the sun was already beginning to set, so I took pictures of it, of course.
When I drove into town at home, it was just a little after 5:00 as you can see by the clock in the courthouse tower, but the sun was rapidly setting. I don't care at all for these shorter days with less sunlight, but at least the sunset was pretty.

Hi Daisy, I can only imagine sitting through 22 of those presentations... I feel sorry for the people who had to present toward the end!!!! Glad you found some possibilities though...
I don't like the time change either. Getting dark at 5 p.m. is not fun at all... BUT--you captured a great sunset.
Hugs,
Betsy
Mr. Nicholas is very interesting. I imagine you were pretty tired after watching so many acts though. Your sunset photos are so pretty. We had a very rainy Monday and by about 4:30, it was really dark outside. It makes the nights seem so long!
Hello Daisy!
5pm already quite dark yeah :)
Look awesome!
Don't look like much traffic there and ohhhh careful while you are driving and snapping photos away :)
Good evening and hope you had a great dinner today? :D
Hi Daisy,
you've been very tired watching so many presentations... but i'm sure you must be happy in the end... coz you got capture so many beautiful sunset... hehe....I can felt it through your pictures..
hope you have a resting week.
hugs,
nensa
Mildred, yes, when it is raining, the darkness stretches even longer. I already miss the long days of summer. I guess I better get used to it for a while yet though. :-)
Netster, there rarely is much traffic in my little town. :D Yes, I was careful taking pictures. HA! My dinner? Well, funny you should ask. I had a big lunch and the people at the conference provided us with muffins and such, so I wasn't very hungry for dinner. I was the only one home last night and didn't feel like cooking, so I just had a bowl of oatmeal and a banana!! HA! It tasted good to me though. :-)
Nensa, I was tired by the end of the day, but the pretty sunset was a nice welcome home. :D
Hope you all have a good week and hugs to you all!
Betsy, I definitely enjoyed the acts in the morning more than the ones in the late afternoon. I was especially tired of seeing the magicians--they all seemed to do the same tricks. I didn't know there were so many people out there trying to make a living from doing magic acts!! Hope you have a great week! Hugs to you!
I bet your head was spinning by the time you got out of there!!
Happy Tuesday to you!
There have been some excellent sunsets lately in northern Ohio. I guess it makes up for having to drive right toward the sun to go home, huh? And I am glad that these story tellers and artists are still out there finding "gigs" and enriching life. In this economy, it is easy to say they are "non-essential". For the sake of our quality of life and a rich future with meaning, I would say they are essential.
Daisy,
I like you sunset photos very much. I'm sure the magic shows were great to begin with, but got tiring near the end. But they do sound as though they were fun. I would have liked them.
I'm also having trouble adjusting to the time change.
It sounds like a fun day, and you are so right. Too much of anything (even quilts!) leaves me glassy eyed. I had no idea your new job would entail this much travel! Any puppet shows?
Your pictures are wonderful but I agree with you... I don't care for the time change, I get off from work and it is almost dark.
Happy Tuesday to you too, Dorothy! :D Yes, by the end of the day, they were all starting to run together for me. I tried to take notes on each one and put stars by the ones I thought were the best. I felt a little like one of the judges on American Idol! HA!
Ben, the sunsets have been quite lovely lately. They are definitely worth watching for. And yes, some of the storytellers and other artists we saw were really quite talented, and I am glad they are continuing those traditions. :-D
Hi Brenda. Overall, it was a fun day for me. Basically, I just sat and waited to be entertained. Not a bad way to spend a day. :D I'm glad you liked the sunset photos. Thank you.
Diana, ordinarily I don't travel much except out to one of our branches once in a while. These past two weeks have just been extra busy with out of town meetings and such. Things will settle back down to normal now for a while I think. There were some ventriloquists there who used "dummy" puppets. They were pretty good and were funny. I think some of the others use puppets as part of their programs, but didn't happen to use them for this presentation.
Thank you, Denise. I'm glad you liked the photos. :-) I miss the sun during these shorter days. It seems I go to work just as daylight is coming around and go home just as it is going away.
I bet that was a fun day, even though it was tiring. The photos at the end of your day are terrific! Such a beautiful sky!
Chris, that sunset that was waiting for me when I arrived home felt like a reward for the long day. It was just nice to see it. :-)
I think it all sounds like great fun. You have a mighty cool job! The dusk photos are very nice...Can almost feel the cool aire while looking at them. x-c
I like how you've got three less to consider, easy peasy decision eh? Love the sky pics, some of my favorite colours for sure! These shorter days are hard to take, each year it seems to get harder.
Are you taking pictures while driving?! I would NEVER do that ;-)
Going to check out your illustrator/author now, thanks for the link :-)
Cassie, I do have a cool job. I am a lucky girl. :)
Lanny, I agree it does get harder every year. I miss the sun more every winter, I think. Makes me appreciate it all the more in the spring. :)
J, I only took a couple when I was stopped at the light. Oh, and maybe one other one. At least I slowed down a little to take it. ;)
I bet you did kinda get tired after so many acts. The guy who does the cartoons sounds interesting. I can tell that you really enjoy your new position there. (Not so new anymore is it)
Hope you have a blessed day.
I love your evening photos. Neat to look at sunset where you live.
Hi Becca! Yes, I've had this job for about six months now, so it's not quite as new, but I'm still learning and doing new things. :D
I seem to be in the habit of taking pictures of sunsets here. I'm glad you like them. I don't grow tired of seeing them.
It sure sounds like ya had a day filled with entertainment at the library. Your sky pics are just amazing!!! I tell ya I had to look very, very closely at the clock. We have a clock tower just like that on our city hall on the corner. It sure looked familiar but it's not!
God bless and have the most marvelously blessed day!!!
Nezzy, I've heard others say that our town square seems familiar to them. I have always thought our courthouse square was very similar to the one in the movie "Back to the Future," too. I guess it is a common feature to many small towns across the country. Thank you, and I hope you have a wonderful day too! :-)
Hi Daisy, well done on managing to get through all the presentations, just as well 3 of them didn't turn up! It's actually getting dark at around 4 over here now, which is a tad depressing if truth be told. I'd also just like to thank you for posting the fantastic Limerick today (the only person brave enough to do so). Have a great weekend.
Ryan, 4:00 getting dark would indeed be depressing. I miss the sun so much during these colder months. I'm always more than ready to welcome spring back when it comes.
I'm glad you liked the limerick--not my best work I'm afraid, but I had fun with it just the same. Thank you, and I hope you have a great weekend too! :-)
I'd have had ants in my pants by the end ... but going to that STORE to shop would have given me new life ... WOW! They are everything & all the brilliant colors would perk me up.
The sunset is just beautiful, Daisy. I love the serenity of the end of day ... you always capture it so beautifully.
Have a beautiful & blessed Thanksgiving holiday ~
TTFN ~ Marydon
Marydon, yes, I'm sure you would love that store. They had all sorts of things to decorate with, and I know you are so good at that! I'm glad you liked the sunsets. Happy Thanksgiving to you too! :-)
I love sunsets. And I agree it getting dark so early now. I wish we could stay on the 'spring forward' time so I could have a couple hours of daylight when I get home from work instead of one!
Hello Jen! Welcome! Thanks for visiting and commenting here. Yes, I really miss that extra daylight at the end of the day too. I get spoiled during the summer when the sun doesn't set until 9:00 or so. :-)
Sounds like a fun day!
I love your new profile picture, Daisy!
Thank you, Betty! It was a fun day. Nice to do something out of the ordinary once in a while.
ohh I'll bookmark that link to look at later when I have time...thanks.
Have a nice holiday, Sandy! :D
