Senseless and Sad

Last night, a little after 11:00 pm, we heard sirens.  They seemed very close, perhaps even in our neighborhood, but we didn't know where exactly they were or what was going on.  This morning, we heard on the news what had happened.

Part of the children's playground called the "Imagination Station" had burned.  This playground is in the middle of the park where I take my walks just a couple of blocks from my home.  I go by this playground nearly every day.

Hearing this news was incredibly sad for all of us here in my town.  Perhaps some will think that it was just a playground and it is no big deal, but to the people who live here it WAS a big deal.

This was a big deal because it was a community project.  The money ($130,000) was all donated from private funds to build this playground, and it was built by the people of the town here themselves (2,600 volunteers).  It was designed from ideas that were contributed by area school children when asked what they would like to have as part of their playground.

This was a big deal to me personally, as well.  My Dad, my husband, and my older son (who was just five years old at the time) were all part of those from our community who volunteered their time to help build this playground.  My younger son was born the same year this playground was built.  Both of my boys grew up playing here.

We have been to countless birthday parties and family picnics and class get-togethers held here over the years.  There is a picnic pavilion next to these structures where Vacation Bible School from our church was held and where end of season sports parties were attended by my boys.  Time was always set aside to play on the playground as a part of these gatherings.

It is not known yet what or who caused this fire, or whether it was accidental or intentional.  Whether it was the result of a careless accident or a malicious, senseless arson, the result is the same.  The number of people affected by the loss here are many.  Damage is estimated at $100,000.

If I know the people of my town, this playground will be rebuilt, but in the meantime, the children here have been robbed of one of their favorite places to play.

This is what was on the front page of our local newspaper tonight.  If you click on the picture, you may be able to read the article for yourself, if you are interested.

This is a picture of my younger son playing at the playground when both he and the structure were just two or three years old.  This son is now 16 years old.

My older son, the twenty-year-old who helped build this playground so many years ago had some of his senior pictures from high school taken at the playground.

When I went to visit the playground tonight to take pictures of where the fire had been, there was a crowd of people milling about the perimeter of the yellow fire line tape.  Some were taking pictures, like me.  Others were just standing silently by and looking at the damage.  Two small boys who looked to be about five years old walked up and stood next to me by the fire line tape.

They stood and stared at the remains of the playground in awe and in silence for a moment or two, and then one of them spoke in a small, sad voice and said, "Holy crap!"

The other boy's face also looking very sad and as if he might cry, said angrily, "Whoever did this is just STUPID!"

Well said, and I couldn't agree more.

Oh how very very sad, Daisy. I am so sorry.... I just hope and pray that it was an accident and that nobody did it deliberately... That would be horrible...

I'm sure your wonderful down will rebuild it though. But in the meantime, I'll keep your community in my prayers.
Hugs,
Betsy

How tragic that this could possibly be created by another human. Sad that anyone would consider doing this ... & all the darling children will not enjoy this place for a while. Those wee ones made a perfect comment ...

Would you send me your mailing address to ~

Thank you. Have a great weekend.

Thank you Betsy and Marydon. I appreciate the kind words. The conjecture around town seems to be that most people believe this fire was deliberately set. There is no way of knowing yet, though. The police kept the whole area roped off all day today trying to preserve whatever evidence is there.
The head of Spangler Candy company here in town (makers of Dum Dum suckers and circus peanuts and Christmas candy canes) has stepped forward and offered to donate whatever money necessary that it will take to rebuild it. It's just so hard to believe that anyone would do this intentionally.

Daisy--So sad! These places hold so many memories for so many people....

This is so sad. Knowing how much we take our grandkids (let alone our own kids in the past) to certain parks around here, and how sad we would be should they burn down, this hurts my heart for you all.

I can't figure out how it could be anything BUT arson, unless you had high winds and lightning or something. It was specific to the park..hmmm.

That photo of your little guy at the park is so cute... and the big guy too!

That's terrible Daisy. So many memories for you and your family. I bet it gets rebuilt even better than before. Hope it wasn't arson. I'd say holy crap too.

How very sad, Daisy, just terrible.

Our community has a similar park, put up by several service organizations and hundreds of volunteers, just like yours. My now 18-year-old grandson love ours (called Kids Kingdom), and asked to go there so often we though he would run away from home to live there. We understand how much your park meant to your community, and feel sad for all of you today. How wonderful to have donations coming in so soon.

This surely is the work of a vandal, or several. What mean-spirited behavior!

Daisy,
This brings tears to my eyes. I'm so sorry about the playground burning. I know it meant so much to you, your children, and your community. I sure hope the community will be able to raise funds to rebuild it. What a sad story.

Betty, it's so true. All I keep hearing from people around town is how they remember all the fun times they've had here.

Sandy, that's what everyone seems to be saying is that it had to be arson. I think it must be so, but I hate to think of someone stooping so low as to do this.

Thank you, Becca. This has made the people of our town rally together, and it looks like it is pretty definite that it will be rebuilt. It's just such a shame that it happened.

Martha, yes, your park sounds like it was built the same way ours was. Thank you for your kind words. We have so many generous and giving people here. I am grateful for the people in my town.

Thank you, Brenda. I appreciate your sympathy. It had a great sentimental value to our family and to many other families here too. It was a very popular spot.

I'm so sorry for your town, it's children and all the families that this fire will affect. Makes no sense that one would do this, but then, so much in this world is senseless. After the sadness, then there's anger. I hope they catch the culprit(s) and justice is served.

That is just sickening! Some poor warped soul probably is responsible for this! I am sad for your town and especially for the kids.

Daisy said...

Thank you, Cassie. I hope they can find out who did this too.

Dorothy, it is so hard to imagine someone doing this. Who goes out and intentionally burns a children's playground? Yes, I'd definitely say they'd have to have a warped soul.

What is reassuring is how our town has united in a pledge to rebuild the playground. The people here care about kids and families and traditions. It is good to see that.

Daisy, that just breaks my heart! And especially if the fire WAS intentional. Sometimes it's just so hard to try and figure some people out, or try to figure out our lives and all that philosophical stuff. Please keep us posted.

Thank you, Becky. I will. I hope you have a nice Sunday.

Hurray for the Spangler Candy Company! I hate that it happened, but it's heart warming to see how adversity brings people together. Larry and I walked through your imagination station the day we had lunch with you. It was a wonderful place for families, and will be again.

Diana, yes, when Mr. Spangler announced that they would provide the funds for rebuilding, I felt like cheering too. It made me want to run right out and buy a big bag of Dum Dum Suckers. :D They have already begun organizing people to help rebuild too. All sorts of clubs and organizations from all around town have already volunteered their services to help and their were sign up sheets at our church and I think most of the other churches in town this morning for those to sign who wanted to be involved in the efforts. It is really amazing to me how united and committed to doing the right thing the people in this town are.

Thank you, Kathleen. I appreciate the good wishes. We are blessed here, I think, to have so many willing hands and hearts to help out when there is a need.

Like you said, your community will rebuild. Such a sad waste, but I hope soon it will be as good as new.

Daisy said...

Thank you, Terra. I hope so too. It is already in the planning stages, so it really does look like it will be rebuilt. :-)

Yes, hopefully it wasn't done deliberately..........but some people do find pleasure in destroying things, as hard as that is for most of us to imagine but as I found out myself last week.

It's hard to find something destroyed that you've cared about and put good energy into...I'm so sorry.

Daisy said...

Thank you, Carol. I guess I just don't understand how some can take pleasure from destroying the property of others, but apparently there are those out there who do it. I'm sorry that you had to find that out too.

Oh that is sad! It's like a punch-in-the-gut sad. I have to agree with boy #2, pure stupidity fuels a fire like this.

Daisy said...

Jeri, I can't even imagine what motives someone would have had to set this fire. Whether it was done on a dare or it was some kind of stunt to "prove" how tough or bad someone could be, or maybe it was some twisted way of getting back at someone? I don't know what the intentions were, but the result was a lot of sad, heartbroken kids.

Kinda have to shake your head at how heartless some people are to go burn down a childs play area.
Thats great that it will be rebuilt.

Daisy said...

Thanks, Kathy! Yes, it looks like it will be spring before they get it done, but it does sound as if it will be rebuilt. :)

Hope you have a good day today!

Netster said...

This is so sad! any updates of this park to be rebuild?

Its definitely an intentional act. too bad they choose to burn down a park instead of their own house.

Daisy said...

Hi Netster! :-) It will take a few months before it can all be taken care of, but yes, eventually I think it will be rebuilt. Hope you have a good day today.
