At the Nursing Home

At the Nursing Home

A turtle of a man--
brown, leathery skin,
wrinkled neck,
bald head,
tiny eyes--
and a mouth like a beak
(because he had forgotten
to put his dentures in
that morning)
traveled down the hallway.

His teeth were still sitting
on the nightstand by his bed.

Not much snap left in them anymore anyway.

From inside the hard shell
of his wheelchair,
he pulled himself slowly
down the long white tiled floor
with just his shuffling feet
in scuffed leather slippers.

His hands held the elbows
of his arms
pulled up tight
against his stomach
as if he were holding something
to his chest
that he didn't want to share.

He crept along the white hallway
the way a snapping turtle
can sometimes be seen
crawling down a road.
Neither knowing his destination.

No one else knowing either.

Although, he moved by inches,
time was flying quickly by him
like a bird in the air above him.

It swooped just by his head
so close
that he felt the breeze
from its wings
on his ears.

He raised his head
trying to keep his eye on the bird
as it darted past him and away down the hall.

He wanted to catch that bird
and hold it still,
but it moved too fast for him,
and got away from him,
as it does for us all.

Listen To The Falling Rain--Truly Grateful Series

I woke up to the sound of rain hitting the window this morning. It was relaxing and peaceful.

It has stopped for now, but it has done two wonderful things. It has washed the air giving it a fresh, spring smell, and it has turned the grass a rich shade of green. WOO HOO!! It's not brown anymore! It's turning a more beautiful color of green with each passing day.

In celebration of the rain, the first thing I am going to do is post some of my favorite songs about rain.

"Listen To the Falling Rain"---Jose Feliciano

"Rhythm of the Falling Rain"---The Cascades

"It's Raining Again"---Supertramp

Of course, I would be remiss to not include this final song. This song brings me to the second thing I'm going to do in celebration of the rain today---DANCE!

"I'm Singin' in the Rain" with Gene Kelly.

I hope whatever the weather you are having that you find a reason to dance today.

Lord, for rain and the music that celebrates it, let me be truly grateful.

Mellow Yellow Monday---Dandelions

The dandelions have popped up all over the grass. Perhaps not a mellow image for some, but they certainly are yellow. Weed or not, I have always liked dandelions. It is probably their sunny yellow color that makes me like them.

Today, however, they are reminding me I have mowing to do. I mowed our yard here yesterday, but I still need to get the grass mowed over at my mom's house.

My husband and son are sacked out on our big L-shaped double couch like bookends, both home sick suffering from "Man Colds."

So, I'm thinking this is probably a good time for me to get outside and get that mowing done. ;)

Music Monday---A Song For You

Karen Carpenter had such a beautiful voice. Here's "A Song For You."

A Song For You--lyrics
(sung by Karen Carpenter)

I've been so many places in my life and time

I've sung a lot of songs, I've made some bad rhyme

I've acted out my love in stages

With ten thousand people watching

But we're alone now, and I'm singing this song for you

I know your image of me is what I hope to be

I've treated you unkindly but darlin' can't you see

There's no one more important to me

Darlin' can't you please see through me

Cause were alone now, and I'm singing this song for you

You taught me precious secrets of the truth, withholding nothing

You came out in front, and I was hiding,

But now I'm so much better, and if my words don't come together

Listen to the melody cause my love is in there hiding

I love you in a place where there's no space or time

I love you, for in my life you are a friend of mine

And when my life is over, remember when we were together

We were alone, and I was singing this song for you

Smiley Sunday---Oh Happy Day!

Tonight we attended a dinner prepared by the youth group members of our church for those who had sponsored their mission trip to Mississippi. My younger son was one of the youth team members who went on that trip and helped with tonight's dinner and presentation. After the dinner, they also gave a presentation about the things they did and learned on the trip.

They shared many stories about their experiences in Mississippi as well as showed a video of the many projects that they worked on while there. Along with stories of the spiders, snakes, lizards, and rats both dead and alive that they encountered while working there, there were stories of friendships made, problems faced and conquered through teamwork and cooperation, and the joy and sense of accomplishment they felt from being able to help those who were in need.

So I am smiling, not only because I didn't have to cook supper tonight, (although that alone is enough to make me smile) but because I enjoyed hearing about their trip. I am so proud of my son and the others in his group because they were willing and brave and generous enough to want to make a difference in this world we live in, and they wanted to do it in the name of Christ.

My friend Jen from the blog Unglazed last week made a comment which reminded me of the song "Oh Happy Day." So I wanted to post a video of that song to go along with this post.

I hope your Sunday was a happy day and was one worth singing about.

Spring Walk

I just wanted to share some pictures from my walk yesterday. Spring has arrived.

This tree is just down the street from my house.

I see a nest of some sort up there close to the top. They certainly have a beautiful view from there. As they say in the real estate business, "Location, location, location."

Under the big old trees in the park was a whole carpet of tiny flowers. There were two different kinds. This was one of them.

This was the other kind. They all have their heads hanging down. They remind me of little Dutch girl hats or maybe Sally Field as the Flying Nun.
I tried to get a bug's eye view of them from the ground underneath them looking up at them.

The carpet of flowers covers most of this whole area under the trees in the park.

From a distance away, the white flowers on this bush looked like fluffy spiders floating in the air.

This is what they looked like up close.

My favorite weeping willow tree is getting new leaves. The branches look like big soft feathers.

Baseball is back in swing. There was quite a crowd at the local high school baseball game.

There was another game going on at this field---girls' softball here.

The church field had a game going on too.

pretty in pink

I got the feeling I was being watched, but they weren't real.

a ceramic cat

a squirrel

and a bunny

There were more beautiful trees and flowers on the return home.

A Reason To Be

This photo is from Pixdaus.

While visiting my mother at the nursing home this week, I noticed a woman in a wheelchair who was following after one of the aides as she walked down the hallway.

"What needs to be done?" she asked the aide. "Do you need me to make the beds or wash the dishes? I can help. I want to help."

"No, the beds are all made, and we have somebody here to do the dishes. You don't have to worry about that here."

"But I need to have something to do. I can do something to help out around here. I need something to do."

"Well, I'll have to see if I can find something for you then," the aide replied.

I don't know if the aide found something for her to do, or what it was if she did, but I hope she kept her word to the woman in the wheelchair.

We all need to feel as if we are useful, that we have a purpose, that we can contribute.

I saw this photo of a candle in a broken water jug, and it reminded me of that woman in the wheelchair. Although the woman is no longer able to move about as she once did, she can still do things with her hands. There are things that she can still do to make the world a better place, even if it is only in her little corner of it.

In the same way, the water pitcher in the photo above is broken and no longer useful to carry water, but it can serve another purpose. With part of the pottery broken away, it has now become a lamp. A candle tucked inside of it gives off light. Perhaps it is there in the window to welcome home a loved one, to help them find their way.

As I grow older and find that there are things I can no longer do, I hope I can discover other ways to let my light shine through.

Matthew 5:13-16: "Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

Music Monday---Celebrate Earth Day

Earth Day is this week on April 22nd. It is a day set aside to inspire awareness and appreciation of the earth's environment. John Denver's song, "Celebrate Earth Day," is my choice for this week's Music Monday.

Celebrate Earth Day

by John Denver
(lyrics)

Celebrate morning,
The cry of a loon on a lake in the night
Dreams that are born in the dawn's early light
Celebrate morning.

Celebrate living,
The laughter that sings in the heart of a child,
Freedom that flies to the call of the wild,
Celebrate living.

Celebrate evening,
The stars that appear in the loss of the sun,
Whispering winds, 'We are one, we are one'...

Celebrate Earth Day, every day,
Celebrate Earth Day, every day
Celebrate land and sea
Celebrate you and me
Celebrate Earth Day, every day

Mellow Yellow Monday---Afghan

It was a damp, chilly day today---a day just meant to wrap up in a colorful, crocheted afghan and mellow out on the couch with a good book. Happy Mellow Yellow Monday to you.

Smiley Sunday--Spring Trees

It was chilly and windy today and sprinkled rain off and on with the temperature in the middle forties. In between the times it was raining, I managed to get a short walk in. It is still too early for most of the spring trees to be out in bloom here yet, but I did find just a few blossoming in the park today. They were enough to make me smile.

From a distance, the trees pictured above looked almost like they had pink clouds of smoke sitting on their branches.

The flowers on the branches are a delicate pink and white.

If I could freeze time, I would definitely make it be spring year around.

This little white blossoming tree below was farther down on the path in the park.

It looked like an umbrella to me.
So, of course, I had to go and stand underneath of it
just to see what that was like.

This is the view looking out while standing next to the tree trunk.

It was like a lacy flower veil.

I hope you found a reason to smile today.
