The ladybugs that were here last week have finally gone. They come here every fall for a few days in a big swarm and land on the outside of our house, on the doors, and around the windows. They also land all over any humans that happen to be walking about in the area where they are swarming.
Although they aren't poisonous and don't inject venom into your skin, they do "bite" sometimes when they land on you. It feels like a tiny little pinch. It's not much, but it is just enough for you to go, "Hey!" and to react by trying to brush the creatures off of you. Supposedly, when they give you those little nibbles, they are "taste testing" you to see if you would be good to eat.
Although I didn't get any pictures or videos of the swarm when they were here. I did get a picture of the aftermath from one of our upstairs windows. I wrote a poem to go with the photo below.
Ladybug Lemmings
Red beetles with black spots come every fall
to swarm on the doors and windows.
Red clouds of them billow about,
stirred up whenever the wind blows.
Step outside---for even a moment,
and they're on your hand, your arm, your elbow.
You'll be brushing and swatting and shaking,
doing all you can--- just to make them go!
Like lemmings heading for the ocean,
they crowd toward the crack under the screen.
One by one they squeeze past the window frame,
only to be trapped in a suicide scene.
Later, I find them inside the window.
Their dried, crispy, crunchy carcasses all in a heap.
Their quest to find a spot of warmth for a moment
has instead led them to the fate of eternal sleep.

This is a video of a ladybug invasion as reported by CNN. Luckily, the swarm that came here to my house was nowhere near the size of the one in this video.

I've never seen or heard of this happening. That's amazing!
The local pest control companies are all advertising about the Asian ladybugs right now, but we sure haven't seen anything like your infestation! Glad you got it under control! Oh, as usual - love the poem!
Hi Susie! Hi Terri! Luckily, the swarm that came here was nothing like the size of that one on the tree in the video. It was much, much smaller. Still, I was glad when they moved on because they can be a bit of a nuisance.
I'm glad you liked the poem, Terri. Thank you! :D
I found one of those little critters in my shoe when I got home yesterday. I spent my lunchtime walk trying to stay out of their flight paths.
Hi Diana! They are hard to avoid sometimes when they are flying about. When they were swarming here, I seemed to walk into them no matter what direction I went.
I use to get excited when I saw a ladybug. We get a lot of them occasionaly, but not this year.
Oh and dont' suck up the dead ones in a vaccum cleaner unless you throw the bag away immediately. PU!
Hi Jen! That is so true about the vacuum cleaner. Those little buggers stink to high heaven! HA! :D
Ugh Daisy.... We had them a couple of times--usually in the spring and only for a couple of days. We had to close up the house to keep them from 'somehow' getting in...
Have you ever killed one of those things???? They STINK BIGTIME!!!!!
Glad yours are gone now.... That's no fun!
Hugs,
Betsy
Hi Betsy! Yeah, they are usually only here for a day or two. I'm glad they don't stay around any longer than that.
I like ladybugs - but not as many shown in that video - LOL! Enjoyed your poem too!
Thank you, Shelley! I'm glad I've never seen up close and in person that many ladybugs together at one time either. Just looking at that "red" tree made me start to itch! HA! :D
I have heard of these little bugs. We used to have quite a few lady bugs swarm our back porch. I haven't seen that many this year. Loved the poem!blessings,Kathleen
Interesting post Daisy. We had a swarm here, just a small one and only for the afternoon. It's the first time I've seen anything like that although I had heard of them. It sounds as though you get them every year, I wonder if that happens here.
Hi Daisy, Yesterday evening my brother drove us about 1 hr. away to the mtns. of n. GA. We stopped at a Autumn leaf look out place to take a picture and millions of lady bugs swarmed us!
LOL I think it might be kinda neat to see a swarm of them outside. Don't think I would want the darn things getting in the house. My mom had trouble with brown and black ladybugs getting in her house one year.
Thank you, Kathleen! It is an old belief that ladybugs bring you good luck, so I guess I shouldn't complain, but when there are so many all at once, it can be annoying at times!
Lynne, they seem to come here every fall and sometimes we see them come through in the spring as well. I guess they must migrate similar to the way birds do, but I'm not sure.
Uh, oh, Mildred, they must have headed your way after they left my house. HA! :D
Hi Kathy! It is neat to see so many at once altogether, I just don't like having to walk through where they are flying about because they always land on me. Then the rest of the day, every time I feel the slightest touch from brushing against something or whatever, I think I still have them crawling on me. HA!
They get in-between our windows, but we usually don't get too many in the house. A few might manage to sneak in when someone goes in or out the doors or they hitch a ride in on someone's clothes sometimes.
they were all over my office! they kept dropping out of nowhere - completely skeeved me out! blech! my friend annette said they were all over europe - closed some holiday sights. NASTY!
Hi Tracey! They are so little that they can get in through some very small spaces. I don't like having them get inside either.
I didn't know they were bad enough to close things down anywhere. YIKES! They must have had a pretty big swarm.
Thanks for stopping by today. Hope you have a great weekend! :)
The poem was really lovely. Love the lady bugs
Thank you, Toni. I'm glad you liked my poem. I like ladybugs too--as long as it is just one at a time. When they come in crowds, I try to avoid them. They are cute little creatures though.
I can remember when one of my sons was very young, there was a ladybug on the back of the pew while we were at church. He watched it for quite a while and then let it crawl on his hand and on his hymnal and Sunday School papers. That was a lucky ladybug for me because it kept my son entertained and quiet through almost the whole church service. HA! :D
IN our local mountains we had gone for a hike when we saw the same phenomenon, it was just at the beginning of spring I think. We were covered in them and they tickled.
Sandy, we see them swarm here both in the spring and in the fall. Although, it seems like there are always more of them in the fall to me. It is pretty hard to avoid them when you come upon them like that. They are just everywhere.
